The History of The Old Gatehouse Bexwell
Located at Bexwell, near Downham Market,The Old Gatehouse is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade-II Listed Building.
It has been interpreted as the surviving 15th Century gatehouse of Bexwell Hall.
It is due to the building’s broad historic and architectural significance, that it has been listed as such.
It is constructed of a combination of rubble, ashlar and brick, its most striking features are its medieval windows, which date back to 15th Century, and a porch flanked by two polygonal turrets.
The building has evolved over the centuries and during these periods, it is obvious that some of the building material may have been used elsewhere.
The quality & quantity of ashlar used has led to the suggestion that the Old Gatehouse was constructed from ecclesiastical spolia.
